To calculate VAT in the UK quickly, use a VAT calculator. Just enter the price, decide if you want to add or remove VAT, select the right VAT rate, and the calculator will display the net amount, VAT amount, and total.

To add 20% VAT to a price, multiply the net amount by 1.20. For example, £100 without VAT becomes £120 with VAT. The VAT is £20.

To find the price before VAT at the 20% rate, divide the total by 1.20. For example, £120 with VAT divided by 1.20 equals £100 before VAT.

Removing VAT isn’t just taking away 20%. VAT is based on the original price, not the final price. If a price includes 20% VAT, you divide it by 1.20 to get the net amount.
